Orthopaedic surgery (Orthopaedics) is the branch of surgery which treats conditions involving the musculoskeletal system (bones and muscles). Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical treatments to treat musculoskeletal pathology including trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumours, and congenital conditions.

Our orthopaedic surgeons are trained in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery, however they each have a special interest in specific areas. They have a wide experience in dealing with sports induced injuries and orthopaedic trauma. Some of the orthopaedic services available at the GibMed International Hospital are:

Hand & Upper limb Conditions

Common hand and upper limb conditions treated by our upper limb specialist, Mr Marius Negru, include carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger/thumb problems, ulna nerve entrapment syndromes, tennis and golfers elbow, Dupuytren’s contracture, hand and wrist ganglions.

Shoulder Conditions

Mr Marius Negru is also able to investigate and treat all major shoulder conditions including pain, degenerative / arthritic disease and bony injuries.

Foot Conditions

Common foot problems include degenerative disease, bunions, gait disorders, plantar fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma (a painful lump related to the nerves in the foot), fractures, congenital deformity and hammer toes. Many of these conditions can be treated locally in the clinic by our podiatry service, more complex procedures are undertaken by surgeons in our partner hospitals in Spain.

Knee & Lower leg problems

Mr Thomas Boerger, our orthopaedic knee and hip specialist, treats degenerative disease and traumatic injuries to the knee. Procedures available through the clinic include arthroscopy +/- meniscectomy, meniscal repair, articular surface debridement, cartilage transfer, anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Other procedures around the knee include Larson’s lateral collateral ligament reconstruction, high tibial osteotomy, unicondylar Oxford knee replacement and total knee replacement.

Hip Conditions

Mr Boerger is able to investigate and manage a wide range of hip pathology including arthritis and hip impingement syndromes.  Conditions such as include nerve entrapment syndromes, chronic bursitis and non-arthritic pain are also treated. Surgical procedures include total hip replacement,  stabilisation of hip fractures, release of the lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh and, distal fascia lata release for chronic trochanteric bursitis.

Broken bones & trauma

In more complicated cases our team offer open reduction and plate fixation of fractures, intra-medullary long bone fracture fixation, peri-articular fracture fixation and tendon repair (Achilles, quadriceps, extensor hand and foot) at our partner hospitals in Spain.
