The 10-bedded, day case Surgical Unit, with its 2 operating theatres, endoscopy suite, state-of-the-art sterilisation unit and 6 overnight beds is specifically designed for the treatment of most day case and short stay surgical procedures across several surgical specialities including Orthopaedics, General Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Vascular and Plastic/Cosmetic surgery, and Urology.
Our Surgical Centre complies with the latest UK NHS design standards and is equipped with the latest in surgical lighting, climate control, and laminar flow systems. Our healthcare team is charged with ensuring that the GibMed theatre environment meets the stringent CQC standards in cleanliness and infection control.
Laminar flow systems use High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters to create a constant unidirectional flow of filtered air through the operating theatre which reduces the risk of airborne contamination and surgical site infections. This is particularly important for joint replacement surgery.
Minimally invasive diagnostic procedures of the internal organs including colonoscopy, gastroscopy, cystoscopy, and bronchoscopy are all performed in our Endoscopy Unit. Equipped with specialist equipment, video monitors, and comfortable patient recovery areas, Gibraltar patients no longer need to travel to Spain for these procedures.
In addition to providing a high-quality day case surgical service across several specialities, the GibMed Surgical Centre also provides overnight care for patients who require a longer post-operative observation period. Our 6 inpatient suites are designed with patient comfort in mind and feature comfortable adjustable beds with ergonomic mattresses, ensuite bathrooms, TV, and provision for an accompanying adult, with on-site, residential overnight nursing and medical support.
